Mosquitoes are widespread
throughout Australia. The female is the blood
sucker and is capable of causing irritation and it
is the vector of sometimes fatal diseases such as
encephalitis, dengue fever, and the anopheline mosquito
carries malaria. Adult mosquitoes are about 3 to 6
mm long, slender with one pair of wings and they have
piercing and sucking mouthparts. They have long legs
in comparison to their size. Their larvae develop
in water.
